More about Jay Dinshah's "Fruit for Thought"
series on fruitarianism, and how to order

Due in part to this site's stance of going "beyond vegetarianism," Ahimsa newsletter publisher and long-time vegan Jay Dinshah refused permission for us to reprint excerpts from his 4-part "Fruit for Thought" series from 1976-77 that investigated real-world fruitarians of the 1970s, including a lengthy dissection of the philosophy and rationale of fruitarianism. However, to provide access to this eye-opening and very well-written (and enjoyable) in-depth piece, we're providing information here for ordering the series directly from Dinshah's American Vegan Society.

We would advise potential readers that the material in accompanying Ahimsa articles appearing with the series in support of veganism (though not total fruitarianism) in apes is by now outdated and known to be erroneous, as explored at length elsewhere on Beyond Veg. However, this does not detract from the majority of the points made about fruitarianism in the "Fruit for Thought" series itself.

In fact, it is amazing how timely those points still are today, and that the record of the fruitarian movement provided by Dinshah's article series shows just how little things have changed in the more than 20 years since the series first appeared. Does history repeat itself? If you have any knowledge of today's fruitarian movement, you'll see only the characters in the drama have changed. And a few of the original players are still around even today--though some have since changed their tune considerably, and would probably rather you not see this groundbreaking piece of investigative journalism.
